Why You Need Both Science and Spirit to Survive Divorce: The “Two-Handed Grip”

When my "Divorce Bomb" went off 20 years ago, it was mind-blowing—in the worst way possible. My mind motor was redlining at 6,000 RPMs with anxiety, fear, and confusion. I was banging my head against the wall just trying to get the unquiet mind to shut the hell up.

But today, I want to blow your mind in a good way.

I realized something massive during my live stream today. We talk a lot about the Hand GPS—that tool to navigate from destruction to construction. But I realized that to drive this "Inner Big Rig" down the highway of life, you can't do it with one hand.

You need a Two-Handed Grip. You need the Science (The Left Hand) and the Spirit (The Right Hand).

The Left Hand: The Science

My old football coach used to tell me: "If you stay in your head, you're dead."

He was right. If you just analyze your divorce to death, you’ll freeze. You’ll get tackled. But you still need the logic. You need the strategy.

The Left Hand is about the tactical steps. It’s the checklist. It’s the dopamine hit you get when you actually do something to move forward.

This is what I call the "Pinky Protocol." I stole it from Stephen Covey, but I’m making it trucker-friendly: Begin with the End in Mind.

• The Science tells you how to get there.
• The Science maps the neural pathways from the thought to the action.
• The Science proves that you can actually rewire your brain from being a Destroyer to a Builder.

The Right Hand: The Spirit

But here is the kicker, gentlemen. You can have all the science and strategy in the world, but if your tank is empty, you aren't going anywhere.

"If the heart is the only thing, you have no place to start."

You need the Right Hand. This is the Heart. The Soul. The Spirit.

For me, this comes from my roots. It comes from my "Drill Sergeant Daddy" who drilled discipline into me. It comes from my Grandfather—the cowboy in the Stetson hat—who sat around the campfire telling stories about "William the Wise" and "Frank the Foolish."

The Bible says: "As a man thinks in his heart, so is he."

That isn't just poetry. That is the fuel.

• The Science gives you the Map.
• The Spirit gives you the Gas.

The Two-Handed Grip

If you try to navigate your divorce using only logic (Left Hand), you will burn out because you have no emotion or faith to sustain you. If you try to navigate using only emotion (Right Hand), you will crash because you have no steering or strategy.

You need to grip the wheel with both hands.

I am a product of both. I am the science nerd from high school, and I am the grandson of the cowboy who quoted scripture. I am the result of a Drill Sergeant’s discipline and a Musical Mama’s heart.

And so are you. You have a Biblical Beating Heart and a Scientific Mind.
